North East Junior Karate Championships, April 2004

North East Junior Karate Championships a huge success

The Northeast Junior Karate Championships were held in Ardee Community Centre last weekend. This is only the second year that the championships have been held, but it has already established itself as a major event in the karate calendar. This year's event attracted teams from the four provinces of Ireland and several teams travelled from England, Scotland and Wales to compete. The Championships are hosted by the I.W.K.R.. "It was a huge success this year, and it was great to see all the effort put in by the children and their parents been rewarded", said head Coach Tommy Marrett. There was competition for all age groups from 7 to 17. The I.W.K.R. did the host club proud winning a huge amount of individual and team medals. The Club had a clean sweep in the girls under 10 individual kata, kumite and in the girls team kumite under 10. The day was nicely concluded when Ireland's Chief Referee sensei Fran Nangle awarded I.W.K.R.'s Head Coach Tommy Marrett his black belt second dan.
